*Jewelry Instructor, Armory Art Center
Michel’s work is composed of hand carved cast pieces in sterling silver and brass combined with large copper shapes that are enameled with vitreous enamel. The sterling silver is usually oxidized and sometimes the cast cups are filled with enamel. Michel likes to combine these two techniques to create unique statement pieces of art jewelry.
Most of her enamels are composed of irregular curved shapes that are hammered and manipulated into slightly convex or concave surfaces. They are then sifted and fired with six to eight coats of enamel. The cast pieces are composed of cup or vessel forms that she carves from a solid piece of hard wax as well as using molten wax.
For the past several years she has been obsessed with these little cups. She started making them by dipping molten wax over glass, play dough, and other found objects to create these miniature vessels. They are then attached to carved wax or to each other. The obsessions has grown for her and she is also making larger raised cups and bowls that she enamels as well.
As a woman she is inspired by vessels. Vessels are used to embody and to carry things. Women embody so many things literally and metaphorically. We carry other human beings, feelings and emotions. It is our power. The vessel is a sensuous representation of women for me.
